My great love affair with Horace Cleveland continues! Here’s the new annual report we produced for the Minneapolis Parks Foundation, the nonprofit organization behind the big RiverFirst initiative, an ambitious public/private effort to connect every corner of Minneapolis through a continuous river front park system. That was the original plan Cleveland, the visionary Victorian landscape designer, laid out for the Twin Cities 140 years ago, but it was never fully realized–a fact that irritated him no end. Cleveland is one of those founding characters who seems connected to nearly everything good and decent in public design, from protecting the green space where Como Zoo and the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory now stand, to the beautiful Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Concord, MA, where several of my own ancestors take up some acreage.
